Lighting

Lighting Direction & Quality

Where light comes from — and how hard or soft it is — shapes everything.

Direction defines form

Light coming from the side reveals texture and dimension through shadow. Light from the front flattens a subject. Light from behind creates silhouettes and rim light. The direction you choose is a storytelling decision, not just a technical one.

Hard vs. soft

A small, bare source relative to the subject produces hard, defined shadows. A large, diffused source — a softbox, or an overcast sky — produces soft, gradual shadows. Distance and modifier size, not power, control softness.

Classic patterns

Rembrandt lighting places a small triangle of light on the shadow-side cheek. Flat/beauty lighting comes from near the camera axis and minimizes shadow, common in beauty and product work.

Now practice it

Open the 3D Studio and recreate Rembrandt lighting, then flatten it into a beauty-light setup.
